Drainage & Ditching Issues

We have a rather backward system for drainage permits etc here in Roberts County and this has led to some
bitter disputes as well as some hard feelings and confusion, to say nothing about lawsuits.

FSA would tell you they must give permission for any and all drainage and our own County Commissioners say
they are the authority on that issue and must be approached before any drainage work is done. There is also
SCS wanting to be asked and don't forget the state water board, Fish & Wildlife and on and on it seems.

It all boils down to the CC handing out permits left and right to almost anybody who will buy them a meal, with
absolutely no foresight in their decisions and certainly no intelligence involved in any of it.

A few months ago there was a CC meeting that garnered newspaper coverage plus many residents to
protest a drainage plan. The Browns Valley mayor pleaded with the CC not to approve more drainage until
MN got some sort of flood diversion in place. Since that time I have lost count on the number of drainage
applications that have been approved by the CC, with absolutely no regard to our neighbors to the east, or any other direction for that matter.

We are posting this subject to see if we can sort out some of the issues and pin down the major problem areas.
Please add your input on this subject. Remember, if all the facts are out in the open, it leaves little room for
shady, hidden projects.

One of the CC told me to go ahead and ditch and when I did another one told me I had to close it up. I got into alot of trouble listening to those bozos. Who has authority in RC?

As I said on an other post Roger got a farmer in deep trouble with the state and water board by telling him he could do something when it was totally illegal. We thought he would be for the farmers but Roger N has proved he is not. 2 more yrs and hes gone. He is to dumb just like Horton then think they know it all. Do not I repeat do not listen to these men. Call Pierre and find out for sure what is ok after Voltz and Stickland go out as they are the only 2 who know the laws and will tell you the truth. Roger should have to pay for what the farmer has to do.

I would just like to take a moment to clarify some information in this post.

The newspaper article cited here, ("Contentious Drainage Issue Tabled" The Public Opinion, Sept. 10 2008), Browns Valley Mayor Jeff Backer only asked that drainage projects emptying into Lake Traverse be delayed, so work can be completed to finish a diversion project on the Minnesota River. The Roberts County Commission did indeed vote to delay that project.

First I want to thank the Watertown Opinion for their fine coverage of Roberts County.
I would also like to thank Mr. O'Sullivan for bringing to our attention that yes, the CC did vote to delay that certain project on that certain day....most likely due to the multitude of objectors and the media coverage.
But since that day the CC has approved many drainage apps and many of those permits allow eventual drainage into the Traverse Watershed.
