Race Relations - Can We Live Together?

It appears like we need to address issues concerning the Natives and the Whites again. Just when it seems we might have gotten past all the ugliness and are beginning to come together as Americans, race rears its' ugly head again.

Why can't we forget our differences and work together for the good of our community, our children, our futures? Why can't we all think of this as "our county", "our Sisseton" rather than the same old "us" vs "them"?

Try to think of us each as simply "Americans" with no adjective in front of that word, it might just work. We all pretty much drive on the same roads, drink the same water don't we? Let what is past go. We cannot change the past, but we can let go of it.

If all of us turn to face the future and work to improve our way of life here, we may just happen to forget our differences and focus on our common goals.

Together we CAN do this. Each and every one of us can make this happen if we let it. How about giving this a try? To begin with, I believe our present government (aka CC/SA) is the one biggest hurdle we need to overcome in order to begin a future free of racism and hate.

We must get the current commissioners and states attorney etc voted out-of-office on November 4th!! Every single vote counts so please make your voices heard and make the effort to go to the polls and get them OUT!! Once we achieve unseating the present government officials who would keep hatred, lies and racism stirred up, only then will we have a chance to reclaim our dignity.

I agree with you on all counts but there is one commissioner running that is not racist and that is Louie Voltz. He backs our Sheriff and Jail Administrator all the way. Him we need to keep so he can keep supporting them.A vote for Voltz ia a vote for Owen. Claudia

I differ with your opinion, but respect it Claudia. I have dealt with Voeltz and found him to be bigoted, caustic, extremely rude, thick-headed, dictatorial and on and on.
I cannot say he is also racist IMO, but all his other "qualities" turn me away from re-electing him at this time. I have seen him in action and was very ashamed of his behavior towards others who were politely expressing their opinions.
We all have our own opinions and that is what makes this country so great. The main thing is that we make the effort to vote so we can officially express those opinions.

Back at you Administrator, I also respest you. The Voltz you seen is totelly different from the commissioner I have seen at work at meetings the last 3 years. Keep up the great work with your blog. Claudia

I ask this question just today. Why can't people in Roberts county just be people and get along? I was told its always been this way and never change. Hard to beleive when i've seen many people change over my many years if they want to. I do beleive both places need new leadership. Chairman, commissioers, mayor and residents should make sure they know canidates have honesty and integrety and that they don't have their own agendas before they vote instead of the many other reasons they seem to use ie get my family member in at all costs, power, and money. Just a thought!

There are bigots and racists on both sides and we have to make sure neither get in on both sides. Its up to us folks!!!!!!

But change to what? Mickey Mouse could beat Franklin Piddly. Why would we want someone in office that won't even take responibility for there actions? Yes I mean his DWI.

The white man don't want to live with us. Again sisseton is the mississippi of the north. We should boycott the town so it will go under instead of being taken advantage of.

over 100 years of white man thinking they are better than someone....

as reported in the Sota

From the SWO Tribal Historic Preservation Office −

Dealing with Our Indians

(Taken from the Bismarck Daily Tribune, Dec. 15, 1900.)

Wahpeton Globe: The Sisseton Indians are now receiving a payment of $77 per capita, and their lucky creditors are happy. In this connection the following clipping from a Browns Valley paper is of interest.

A commercial traveler who was in Sisseton the other day said the merchants over there were no doubt making preparations for the prospective Indian payment as the red men are being freely trusted. He said they were selling red shawls that cost about $20 per dozen for $9 apiece, and he witnessed a transaction wherein one Indian agreed to pay $48 for a fur overcoat that could be bought anywhere for $15.

We used to think Browns Valley merchants a little steep on Indian prices, but those Sisseton fellows take the bakery.

A story is told of a Sisseton merchant who recently employed a new clerk. The first day the proprietor devoted much of his time to posting the young man on prices. The next morning a customer came in and inquired of his new clerkship how many pounds of sugar he was giving for a dollar, and the young man promptly replied, “11 to a white man and 8 to an Indian.”

that was in 1900. get over it. the hatred goes both ways, and holding onto events that happened 108 years ago aren't making anything better. when i saw this published in the sota, i was very disappointed that the newspaper of my oyate would print something so distasteful.

forgive, forget, move on...

ONE THING THAT REALLY IRRITATES ALOT OF WHITE PEOPLE IS WHENEVER THERE IS A JOB OPENING AT THE CASINO OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS RUN BY THE NATIVE AMERICANS IT STATES INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY.TO ME,THAT IS VERY RACIST.WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE WHITE EMPLOYERS WOULD SO THE SAME AND SAY WHITE PREFERENCE. THEY WOULD BE SUED FASTER THAN YOU COULD SAY THE WORD.

the casinos don't pay their own people a living wage, they are a bad thing for everyone . . except the real owners . .
